Being a white male

Being a white male

About Soren Neilsen

He was very aware of being a white male and what it brings to society and he was very honest with his answers.

“One of my best friends, he's from India and every time we travel together, he's always taken out for extra security things and checks. And I cannot think of any reason why it's not cause he white from India and then have a different skin color. And then for me clearly an act of him being, uh.”

Hello, my name is August and the date is the 13th of December. I'm here with Soren Nielsen. And I'm gonna be asking you some questions about your experiences throughout the years. You have worked. I'll be asking questions around the topic of being a white, straight male in modern day society. My first question is how are you today?

I'm fine. Thanks. And you?

I'm very good. Thank you.

Uh, now onto my second question, how do you feel about being a white man in society? Do, do, do you think it is looked upon as bad or good?

Um, for me personally, I don't think that it is quite good. Um, but I also know that there are some of my, um, white male, same as I, who are in trouble. Mm-hmm . So where would you put being a white male in your identity? And if you were to list all of the factors that make you who you are, where do you think it would be?Well, that's a, that's a tough one. Um, of course never. Um, I lived my, most of my life in Denmark in Switzerland. I have, but uh, never thought about that question actually before.. Mm-hmm so it's not really, uh, it's not something you think about.Something that I think. Yeah. But, but I do know that being a white, male in living in the Western world come with a lot of privileges mm-hmm so, uh, I think I'm aware of that.

Uh, so the last question is very controversial and you have to answer honestly, have you ever tried to use being a white male as a, an advantage or a privilege?

Uh, not conscious, I would say, but I might have done it unconscious mm-hmm um, and I think that's maybe also sometimes I think we need to look in the, maybe people are not acting conscious in these things, but sort of more unconscious and, uh, I don't think I've ever tried using that.To my, you know, we, cuz I think me as well, it's always, uh, you know, it's normal. I I've never been any, never one's ever done anything racist against me and it's just a normal part of, um, my life and I think that's where all of our family experienced ever, so yeah.

Um, for me personally, I don't think that it is quite good. Um, but I also know that there are some of my, um, white male, same as I who are in trouble.

Yeah. Uh, so about that topic as well, uh, have you ever witnessed, uh, a white male being favored or any non-white human being, being discriminated or oppressed because they weren't white.

Yeah. Um, one of my best friends, he's from India and every time we travel together, he's always taken out for extra security things and checks. And I cannot think of any reason why it's not cause he white from India and then have a different skin color. And then for me clearly an act of him being, uh. Yeah.

So the same next question is really related to that. And uh, do you think being a white male is a privilege in current society or in previous where you have, uh been.

I think we sit on the border of this, for sure. In the past, it was a big privilege. I think now a lot of things are changing and a lot of things come under revision, so hopefully it'll be more neutral in the future. Mm-hmm so, uh, it's not just because we are white and male that you get something, but it's because you have earned done something,What we should aim towards.
