How National Origin Impacts Us

About Michele Monzini

Michele Monzini is a very kind and open-minded person. He has lived in Milan his whole life except for brief studies and he is now working in a coffee producing company: Mokito.

How do people see an Italian?

“Very often abroad the stereotype of Italian pizza, pasta, and mandolin is very different from how I see Italy or at least the portion of Italy in which I live.”

Do you feel proud to be from Italy? 7:40

“Yes, I am certainly proud in many respects such as traditions and history, artistic and culinary heritage, entrepreneurship and resourcefulness, etc .. also embarrassed because too often in Italy there is a lack of civic sense.”

How important is national origin to you? “I consider it important because I consider the traditions and teachings that the culture of the country of origin transmits and leaves in people to be important. These teachings and traditions if contaminated by different experiences… can only enrich themselves allowing you to take the best of every national origin.”

Would having lived in another place change you?

“Certainly, the place where we live and grow up in changes people. I consider it important… to go to different places for this reason: to take away nice things in every place and to be able to do it right.”

“… For me living in Italy [or another country] my whole life makes me see the world in a certain way …, but it can also blind us from a part of it.”

-Michele Monzini

Do you think that people are discriminated against for being from Italy?

“No, I’ve never been discriminated against myself, but unfortunately I continue seeing people being discriminated…  such as the immigrants that are trying to get to certain places.”

How does national origin impact how people see the world?

“… For me living in Italy, my whole life makes me see the world in a certain way and this would depend on where we were born where we come from and where we lived …, but also blinds us from a part of it.”
