Portrait of the Interviewee
I was born in Australia in 1944, right in the middle of world war 2. I of course at the time I had no idea what was happening at the time, but my parents did, even as a small child, I could still sense the fear that lingered there. People often ask me what my inspiration for writing a history book was. I had always wanted to tell the stories and history of my parents and many other Lithuanians. I feel that the discrimination that immigrants had to deal with has never really been talked about so I decided to explain the history behind all of it and much more. Growing up in the fifties and sixties was quite hard for immigrants, there was unfairness and bias towards us we would not have the same chances as locals or would have to work twice as hard for the chances. I was always into history so that is what I chose to do.
The biggest impact on my life was my parents who helped me aspire to be who I am today. My parents were always too sad and sorrowful to tell me about their experiences of the war. The book that I wrote was inspired by my parents and their story along with many others.
“When I was growing up it was hard, we were discriminated against and shunted but didn't let that stop me.”
