Feminism: What Is It?
What is the Primary Purpose of Feminism; Why is it Important?
In general, feminism can be seen as a movement to put an end to sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression and to achieve full gender equality in law and practice. All in all, feminism is to achieve equal rights for both genders and have an environment where everyone is equal; however, this may never be possible to achieve a completely equal community, but there are things we can do to help improve the situation that we are currently in. Now, let's review just some of the day-to-day issues women go through that should be discussed.
What are Some of the Issues?
There are many more issues regarding equality in genders than you may think. for example, the issues they go through in the employment or the biases they go through in sports; there are even safety and sexual assault issues women have to deal with all the time. In general, there are so many issues that seem unnecessary to be an actual thing but instead of turning a blind eye to it, let's look into it.
Jobs and Payment
Jobs are so different for men and women. A lot of the time, women will find it harder to find employment, whether that's because they may be young and possibly need to go on maternity leave or because they just want men. They also may think only men can do it, possibly for jobs where you have to be stronger, like a construction worker. But women don't only have to struggle to get a job; they also have to worry about the money they're getting when they do get that job. How is the money they get different then the money men get? The answer is men are getting more even if women are doing more work. Women could be working harder and putting a lot of effort in, but at the end of the day, they get paid less than a man who could be putting in the same effort or even less. Why do we pay women less for doing the same job? (source). If you look more into the reasons it could make sense for a women to be making less you would find things such as, maternity leave; the time they would have to take off for the child and the amount of hours they work could be affected by that. There is also the possibility of just plain sexism depending on the work place there working at. Now, i don’t think these reasons are reasonable reason to make such a difference in pay gaps, currently for women in america its roughly 78 cents for every dollar a man makes. This may seem like very little although if you made 50 dollars an hour as a male, in five hours a male would have 250, however a female would only get around 195. Is this really fair?
Sports and Sports Opportunities
There are many sports where society believes that men "are better," such as basketball, tennis, and soccer. All are more popular for men playing sports. The highest-paid soccer player for men is Kylian Mbappe, who gets paid 90.91 million euros annually , although, for women, since fewer people watch it, it's roughly 450,000 dollars for Alex morgan. Again for basketball, the highest-paid male, LeBron James, gets paid $119.5 million a year, but the highest-paid WNBA player is Loyd Jewell, who gets paid $231,515 as a yearly salary. This is such a big difference in wages. You may be thinking women get paid less in sports as they bring in less people who watch it therefor making less money to pay them however, the only reason they make less money is because men started playing first giving them the advantage because at the time, women didn’t have the rights to be able to play sports . they were stuck in houses doing housework such as cooking or cleaning.
Safety and sexual harassment
Globally, 81% of women have been sexually assaulted; just in the USA, that would be ⅕ women. One in three female victims of rape (attempted or completed) were between the ages of 11 and 17. It should be noted, it is not just women being sexually assaulted; men do go through it too. Men are also considerably more likely than women to feel safe walking alone at night in their communities. They also found that 79% of women living in cities in India, 86% in Thailand, and 89% in Brazil have been subjected to harassment or violence in public, as had 75% of women in London, UK. Women get harrassed or catcalled or even raped on the daily, cant we do something to try and fix the situation were currently in?
Conclusion
