Being Scottish
About Guy Bart-Smith
If you like fudge go to Rolly’s Fudge Shop and you might see Guy Bart-Smith making some behind the glass. Or you might see him exploring the world, but wherever you see him, he sure will put a smile on your face.
Where are you from?
“I am from the UK, I'm Scottish but I would say I'm from the United Kingdom and I've lived my whole adult life in the United Kingdom… Even though I am Scottish, I identify as British.”
Compared to your other characteristics, how important is your nationality?
“I think it's very important. I think my nationality also gives me my identity, my sense of humor, and which I think is a very big part of who we are… I would say that it is very big and it's very unique and because it's unique and something that we hold on to very dearly. I wouldn't start with that [when introducing himself] but I think my accent if I was meeting people from other countries around the world, especially with Western countries that speak English
Do you think that your nationality impacts the way you see the world around you?
“Yes, I think so, I think. Like I said economically it depends on how much money you've got to spend. How the government views how they structure.”
Have you ever felt discriminated against you of the earth against your nationality?
“Stereotypes are in every country so I don't necessarily see them, even though they probably are negative my perception of them isn't negative...but I've never been abused verbally with hatred because I'm British, but that's not to say that it doesn't happen, it's just I've never been exposed to that. “
Have you ever felt proud or embarrassed of your nationality?
“From where you are from I think there's pride… I also am embarrassed because I think society allows people who don't want to work to not work they become lazy… I have a sense of shame because I don't believe that Society should allow anybody to live like that so I have a better environment for that.
Have you ever felt that you had to do something because of your nationality?
I think we try to live up to the best of the stereotypes that Society gives us… So I think yeah I think if people see that we're from British and we were kind or generous and we are polite so I will maybe not consciously but I think subconsciously behave like that because that's why I think we should be doing because it makes it represents us in a good way.
“ If you can do that as a person, focused on the positive steps, it helps you to become a better person ”
